MSc/PhD Studentship in Movement and Population Ecology at the University of Saskatchewan


University of Saskatchewan's Department of Biology is offering a fantastic opportunity for an MSc or PhD studentship with Dr. Mitch Weegman. The successful candidate will have the chance to work on an exciting research project in movement and population ecology using cutting-edge tracking devices deployed on mid-continent white-fronted geese.

International Partnership:

This project is a collaborative effort among prestigious organizations including the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Environment and Climate Change Canada, US Geological Survey, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and University of Saskatchewan.

Project Goals:

The primary objectives of this project are to quantify habitat use and the extent of inter- and intra-winter movements of white-fronted geese within and between wintering sites. Additionally, the project aims to investigate the relationship between migration attributes (e.g., staging and wintering habitat use) and nesting propensity as well as reproductive outcomes.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates for this position should possess an undergraduate degree in ecology, statistics, or a closely related field. Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate collaborations and excellent quantitative abilities (e.g., experience with Program R, Bayesian methods) are preferred. Knowledge of migratory bird ecology and management, as well as field skills such as capturing and handling birds, will be advantageous. A valid driver's license is required. The successful applicant will be expected to publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and present papers at scientific meetings.
